Weemala

2022 Weemala Riesling

WEEMALA

For those that enjoy something just a little bit different, our extremely drinkable Weemala range has a very loyal following. They're all complex with pretty aromas, deep flavours and excellent value for money.

Weemala is both an Aboriginal word for ‘good view’ and the name of the Logan vineyard in Mudgee. The little devils on the labels represent the local Mudgee birds that have too good a view of our vines in Mudgee and Orange.

TASTING NOTES

The Weemala range is a little bit quirky and has attracted a loyal following for its restrained, elegant and excellent value for money wines. Weemala is both an Aboriginal word for ‘good view’ and the name of the Logan vineyard in Mudgee. The little devils on the labels represent the local Mudgee birds that have a very good view of the Logan vines.

2022 Weemala Riesling – a blend of Clare Valley (60%) and Orange (40%) once again. At first glance very much like the 2021 but with a bit more of everything. Aroma, flavour, zip, texture. Wild yeast ferment, no oak.

If you need more of a refresher, Ned Goodwin at Halliday Wine Companion summed up the 21 nicely. “There is always far more to this series of wines than the pricing suggests. A thrust of flavour incorporating quince, lime blossom, jasmine and lemon drop pastille. A parry of juicy freshness, too, giving a long tow while conferring a welcome effortlessness. Nothing hard or brittle about this. Just pleasure.” 92 points.

A thrust of flavour incorporating quince, lime blossom, jasmine, and lemon.

So, all that, plus! Incorporating aromatic mandarin peel, lime and iced tea. The palate is bright and fresh and juicy with lemon barley flavour and a long finish.

Having a little more fruit from our Orange vineyard this year, this wine shows more intensity and called for a higher residual sugar to balance the acid. This results in a wine that looks dry but is quite full. Giving it curves in all the right places. A favourite for “staff bevvies” at the Cellar Door, especially when summer hits.

As it is so effortless, including a second bottle just made sense. Keep it for about 5 years to see change but still enjoy some crispness or go the whole decade and enjoy a glass of buttered toast and lime marmalade characters alongside hard cheeses like aged gouda or parmesan. Also, very enjoyable on its own as this wine becomes quite voluptuous.
